1605 pass 2011 Medical Board exam

A graduate from the University of the Philippines (UP) in Manila topped the list of passers for the August 2011 physician licensure exam, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced Wednesday.

Mark Augustine Onglao of UP Manila got an 88.4-percent score in the exam to lead the 1,605 passers out of the 2,131 examinees. [Click here for complete list of passers.]

Ateneo's Olcen Racela to carry torch in UAAP Season 74 opening

Athletes of the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) take the spotlight once again as the 74th Season of the UAAP opens this Saturday, July 9 at the Marikina Sports Complex.

Host school Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) decided to go with an Olympic-style opening ceremony for this year’s UAAP. Over 4,000 athletes will be expected to parade in front of 6,000 spectators, many of them students from the UAAP schools.

“We wanted to highlight all the athletes of the UAAP, not just basketball but from other sports,” said UAAP Secretary-Treasurer Emmanuel Fernandez.

Ateneo sports legend, point guard Olsen Racela real name "Rodericko Cesar Escueta Racela" will carry the torch during the opening ceremonies. The torch was passed from school to school, starting with last year’s host, the De La Salle University and ending with AdMU.

UAAP hardcourt action will begin on Sunday July 10, with the De La Salle Green Archers matching up against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws while the Adamson University Soaring Falcons will test defending champion Ateneo Blue Eagles.

Maria Aragon, the 10-year-old Filipino-Canadian singer who was discovered by Lady Gaga, performed before the British Royal Couple Prince William and Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, on Friday (Saturday in Manila).

Aragon sang her own rendition of Canada’s national anthem “O Canada” in front of thousands of people as part of the Canada Day celebration.

The ceremony was held on Parliament Hill in the country’s capital city, Ottawa.

Aragon rose to fame after Lady Gaga posted in her official Twitter account a video link of the former’s own cover of the song “Born This Way.”

For only over a week, the video became viral in YouTube and it gained millions of views.

This paved the way for Aragon to reach her dreams.

After that, Aragon had a duet with Lady Gaga in the latter’s concert in Toronto.

She also appeared in popular American shows including “The Ellen Degeneres Show” and “Good Morning America.”

ABS-CBN Wins 2011 International Gold Quill Award for ‘Boto Mo, Ipatrol Mo’

Division 1: Communication Management MULTI-AUDIENCE COMMUNICATION 'MERIT' Wins by News and Current Affairs ABS-CBN Corporation. For being the first to break the biggest election-related story on the Maguindanao massacre, helping drive young voters to register and vote, and creating an army of change to make the 2010 elections work, ABS-CBN Corporation bagged an international Gold Quill Award in recognition of its election advocacy campaign “Boto Mo, i-Patrol Mo.”

It was through ABS-CBN’s “Boto Mo, i-Patrol Mo” that the world learned about the single deadliest act against journalists when a Boto Patroller first sent a picture from the crime scene to ABS-CBN. And ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel, was the first to break the news.

His bravery in exposing the gruesome crime that left 58 dead showed what BMPM is all about—the ordinary Filipino, making a difference by letting the public know about the realities in his community and the government to do something about it.

“Boto Mo, i-Patrol Mo: Ako ang Simula” was launched a year before the 2010 national elections by ABS-CBN, which pioneered citizen journalism in the country. It not only empowered Filipinos to use technology to patrol their votes but also challenged them to become the start of the change they want for the country.

ABS-CBN was the only Philippine broadcast network to win an international Gold Quill Award from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) for its election advocacy and coverage via the BMPM campaign, which also won awards from the 2010 Philippine Quill Awards and the Anvil Awards.

The multi-platform campaign received 500 reports a day by email, 103 calls a day, and 3,058 texts a day during election season. And on election day, citizens’ reports grew to four per minute as compared to one per minute in 2007 when it was first launched.

During the campaign last year, BMPM has 87,419 registered Boto Patrollers in its netflix database, 125,487 fans on Facebook, 23,111 followers on Twitter, 6,960 members on its microsite, and 3,701 members on Multiply.

It organized vice-presidential and senatorial debates and pioneered the use of a Wireless Audience Response System WARS, which allowed randomly selected citizens to indicate they believe the candidate’s answers or not during the televised debates, which became among the highest trending topics on Twitter.

A message on the website said Philker is composed of Philippine hackers "that possess skills in the areas of cyber security, visual graphics and human manipulation that work on the progression of Philippine cyber culture."

Joey Salgado, spokesman for Vice President Jejomar Binay, said they will ask the concerned goverment agencies to look into it.

Typhoon 'Chedeng' will gain more strength, U.S. scientists warn

Typhoon Chedeng (international name: Songda) will become stronger as it nears the Philippines, U.S. military weather forecasters warned on Wednesday.

The typhoon is already packing maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph, according to weather bureau PAGASA, in its 11 p.m. tropical cyclone update.

Chedeng has intensified over the past 12 hours in the highly favorable environment of the Philippine Sea, according to the Hawaii-based Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). The center is a joint U.S. Navy-Air Force task force that is responsible for issuing tropical cyclone warnings for all branches of the U.S. Department of Defense and other U.S. government agencies.

"Favorable oceanographic conditions will allow for continued intensification," the JTWC said in a report.

It added that the typhoon will only weaken after skirting the country's the eastern section and upon reaching the waters north of Okinawa, Japan.

While PAGASA predicts Chedeng to make landfall over the Aurora-Isabela area on Friday afternoon, the JWTC believes that the typhoon will miss Luzon and stay at sea.

PAGASA said that based on their data, Chedeng is estimated to have rainfall of between 32-64 millimeters per hour.

Science and Technology Undersecretary Graciano Yumul, in an interview on ANC's Top Story on Wednesday, said compared to tropical storm Ondoy (Ketsana) in 2009, Chedeng is "stronger" since the rainfall brought by Ondoy - averaging 56 mm/h - was due to the storm and an intertropical convergence zone, while Chedeng's rainfall is solely due to the typhoon.

PAGASA said Chedeng was spotted 310 kilometers east northeast of Catarman, Northern Samar, as of 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The storm is moving northwest at 15 kph and is expected to be 190 km east of Baler, Aurora province on Thursday night.

Public storm warning signal number 2 has been raised over Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, and Samar Provinces.

Meanwhile, storm warning signal number 1 is in effect over Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Aurora, Quezon, Polillo Island, Marinduque, Burias, Ticao Island, Masbate, Northern Leyte, and Biliran Island.

"Residents in low lying and mountainous areas under signals #2 and #1 are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas are alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by this tropical cyclone," PAGASA warned.

The typhoon is also expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over Visayas and Mindanao.

Crew member missing after jumping into English Channel, A cruise ship crew member is missing after jumping from the vessel into the English channel, a travel company confirmed today.

The 31-year-old Filipino man was seen on CCTV climbing over a railing and jumping from the Celebrity Eclipse at around 10.15pm last night.

The ship, owned by Celebrity Cruises, was eight miles north of Cherbourg, France, when the incident happened.

Crew immediately turned the vessel around and headed back towards the spot where their colleague had jumped. They alerted the French coastguard but no trace of the man was found in an overnight search.

Emergency workers called off the search and rescue mission this morning.

A spokeswoman for Celebrity Cruises said: ''Celebrity Cruises' Care Team is providing support to the crew member's family, as well as his friends and colleagues onboard, and our thoughts and prayers are with them.''
