ABS-CBN Wins 2011 International Gold Quill Award for ‘Boto Mo, Ipatrol Mo’

Division 1: Communication Management MULTI-AUDIENCE COMMUNICATION 'MERIT' Wins by News and Current Affairs ABS-CBN Corporation. For being the first to break the biggest election-related story on the Maguindanao massacre, helping drive young voters to register and vote, and creating an army of change to make the 2010 elections work, ABS-CBN Corporation bagged an international Gold Quill Award in recognition of its election advocacy campaign “Boto Mo, i-Patrol Mo.”

It was through ABS-CBN’s Boto Mo, i-Patrol Mo that the world learned about the single deadliest act against journalists when a Boto Patroller first sent a picture from the crime scene to ABS-CBN. And ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel, was the first to break the news.

His bravery in exposing the gruesome crime that left 58 dead showed what BMPM is all about—the ordinary Filipino, making a difference by letting the public know about the realities in his community and the government to do something about it.

“Boto Mo, i-Patrol Mo: Ako ang Simula” was launched a year before the 2010 national elections by ABS-CBN, which pioneered citizen journalism in the country. It not only empowered Filipinos to use technology to patrol their votes but also challenged them to become the start of the change they want for the country.

ABS-CBN was the only Philippine broadcast network to win an international Gold Quill Award from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) for its election advocacy and coverage via the BMPM campaign, which also won awards from the 2010 Philippine Quill Awards and the Anvil Awards.

The multi-platform campaign received 500 reports a day by email, 103 calls a day, and 3,058 texts a day during election season. And on election day, citizens’ reports grew to four per minute as compared to one per minute in 2007 when it was first launched.

During the campaign last year, BMPM has 87,419 registered Boto Patrollers in its netflix database, 125,487 fans on Facebook, 23,111 followers on Twitter, 6,960 members on its microsite, and 3,701 members on Multiply.

It organized vice-presidential and senatorial debates and pioneered the use of a Wireless Audience Response System WARS, which allowed randomly selected citizens to indicate they believe the candidate’s answers or not during the televised debates, which became among the highest trending topics on Twitter.

For the first time, three respected news icons in Philippine broadcast journalism are joining forces to strengthen “TV Patrol,” ABS-CBN’s flagship newscast and the leading news program in the country for the past 23 years.

Starting November 8, Korina Sanchez and Noli “Kabayan” De Castro will return to television to join Ted Failon in "TV Patrol" to form the most tried and tested news team ever assembled in the history of Philippine broadcasting.

The powerhouse team, all seasoned and working broadcast journalists, is collaborating to present news that matter to Filipinos all over the world and to give back to their kapamilya viewers by strengthening the public service commitment of ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, the country's most credible news organization based on a recent study by Pulse Asia.

Failon, in his 27 years in the industry, is the “Sandigan ng Bayan” for his commitment and focus on issues up to their resolution. Sanchez, on the other hand, is the intelligent and brave “Kakampi ng Bayan,” who has reported on the biggest news in the country since she started in ABS-CBN in 1986. She also holds the distinction of being the first female main anchor of “TV Patrol.”

De Castro, "Kabayan ng Pilipino,” returns with a wider knowledge of the workings of government after his stint as vice president of the Philippines. He started making a name on radio during the Martial Law years. Kabayan is also the original anchor of “TV Patrol,” and the hard-hitting investigative show, "Magandang Gabi Bayan."

In line with this development, the Kapamilya network is also beefing up its late night newscast “Bandila,” and has offered ABS-CBN news veterans Julius Babao and Karen Davila to join Ces Drilon as anchors.

Drilon, Babao, and Davila will provide deeper analysis and extended coverage of the day’s biggest news in “Bandila.”

For news that matters to every Filipino, tune in to the newscasts that stand by the truth and the good of the people. Watch Ted Failon, Korina Sanchez, and Noli De Castro in “TV Patrol," on primetime nights, as well as Ces Orena Drilon, Julius Babao, and Karen Davila in “Bandila” late evening, from Mondays to Fridays in ABS-CBN.

ANC is RP’s Most Influential News Account on Twitter

ANC is RP’s Most Influential News Account on Twitter, anc_abs_cbn_news_channel
ANC has now over 100,000 unique followers on Twitter.
ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel, reached another milestone last Tuesday (Oct 19) after its followers on twitter broke the 100,000 mark, making it the most followed and most influential Filipino news organization on the popular international social-networking site.
This only shows that ANC (#ANCalerts) is the preferred source of more Filipinos from all over the world for breaking news and news updates in the country and the world.
ANC Chief Operating Officer Glenda M. Gloria said this new achievement further solidifies ANC’s presence in social media, which is said to be where the future of journalism is heading with the growing number of people who get and exchange information online.
“ANC was the first TV channel in the Philippines to convert Twitter and Facebook into a second channel,” says ANC Chief Operating Officer Glenda M. Gloria. “We were also the first to have its own social media team, which is composed of young, aggressive and news-savvy producers and writers.”
Because of its social media presence, more young professionals and students are now tuned to ANC, a market that Gloria says ANC had not been successful in penetrating before 2008.
As one of the country’s first and staunchest advocates of citizen journalism, ANC has already built a strong following among netizens. On its Facebook page, around 34,000 of its 41,076 fans actively participate in the ANC 24/7 wall, while post views reach an average of no less than 500,000 a month.
In July 2010, meanwhile, ANC joined other global news channels such as BBC and CNBC, which are regularly advertised by Twitter on its front door. It also tops the list of the most influential Philippine news accounts on Twitter.
On October 4, a regular news day, @ANCAlerts had a unique reader reach of 92,422 but a total reader reach of 5,818,350 based on re-tweets. ANC’s election day coverage, on the other hand, also got the biggest number of unique visitors among all the election newcasts that were live streamed on abs-cbnnews.com on May 10.
Through social media, the Philippines’ first 24-hour global cable news channel hopes to empower Filipinos from across demographics to get involved in discussions on the nation’s issues, to report on the situations in their areas, as well to keep abreast with the latest events in the country.
It has also incorporated social media in its programs like the newly-launched “The Brew” featuring Twink Macaraig, Nadia Trinidad, and Gang Badoy, and “Tease” with Ginger Conejero.
